How do I ensure that the measurement will be accurate?
Follow the 4:1 rule. No eating, drinking, supplements or exercising for 4 hours prior to the measurement, and no smoking for 1 hour prior. Also make sure that the client has rested for at least 10 minutes prior to beginning the measurement.
Why not use an estimate of RMR?
For more than 80 years, health and fitness professionals have relied on equations that estimate RMR using a persons height, weight, age and gender. Such equations have proven inaccurate by nearly 900 calories.
With the BodyGem and MedGem devices, health and fitness professionals can now easily and accurately measure a persons VO2 to determine RMR, providing a precise measurement of the number of calories a person burns each day at rest.
The BodyGem and MedGem devices have been validated against the Douglas Bag technique, the industry standard in analyzing metabolic measurements, and is within 1% accuracy of the Douglas Bag technique for determining RMR.
Does metabolism change over time?
Metabolism varies from person to person and can change over time. It is determined by many factors including body composition (amount of muscle and fat), weight, age, genetics and gender. Weight loss or a change in body composition can significantly affect RMR.
What are empty calories?
Typically, ‘empty’ calories generally refer to foods that are high in calories derived from sugar – especially refined sugars and corn syrup. Not only do these foods tend to be high in calories and low in nutritional value, they tend to burn rapidly, causing a spike in blood sugar levels followed by a rapid energy slump.
The Microlife BodyGem and MedGem indirect calorimetry devices measure your clients Resting Metabolic Rate, to optimize their weight loss results.
Instead of estimating RMR with the Harris-Benedict or Katch-McArdle formula, the BodyGem and MedGem scientifically measure a clients Metabolic Fingerprint, that is unique to them.
Estimation formulas cannot factor in thyroid issues, the effects of medications, etc.
For the best care, the American Dietetics Association recommends using indirect calorimetry to measure RMR for the most accurate assessment of nutritional needs.
The BodyGem and MedGem are the same type indirect calorimeter. They have the same functionality, accuracy and reliability.
The difference is that the MedGem is a FDA 510K-cleared, class II, medical device, which allows licensed clinicians to make insurance claims on their measurements.
