Question: How is the calorie budget generated?

Answer: The daily calorie budget is determined in one of three ways, depending on your weight goal:

If you’re on a weight loss program, your daily calorie budget is determined by taking your RMR and calories burned through lifestyle activity (the number of calories you need to maintain your weight), then subtracting 500 calories per day for each pound you want to lose per week. It is important to re-measure your RMR during a weight loss program to help you quickly reach your goals without hitting frustrating plateaus. Enter your metabolism measurement to establish your daily calorie budget. Get a new metabolism measurement after 2-3 weeks when your metabolism begins to slow because of weight loss, and continue measuring every four weeks until you reach weight maintenance mode.

If you’re on a weight maintenance program, your daily calorie budget is based on your RMR and lifestyle. Once exercise is logged, your calorie budget will reflect the number of calories you burned.

If you’re on a weight gain plan, your daily calorie budget is determined by taking the number of calories you need to maintain your weight and adding 500 calories per day for each pound of desired weekly weight gain, then adding your daily exercise goal calories. If your actual logged exercise calories exceed your exercise goal, then the number of excess calories burned is added to your daily calorie budget.

Question: One of my measurements has no RMR. What does that mean?

Answer: This means the measurement was incomplete.

Question: Where do I find my product registration code?

Answer: The product registration code is located on the inside cover of the CD case.

Question: Why isn’t the exercise goal automatically included in the calorie budget?

Answer: Most individuals have very good intentions when it comes to exercise, but often don’t follow through on a routine basis.  To ensure the accuracy of the calorie budget, exercise goals may be set, but are not included in a daily calorie budget.  However, when an individual does complete exercise and logs it (if they are using BalanceLog software to manage their daily calorie budget), they get credit for it and it is reflected in the calorie totals for the day.

Question:Why is there an age limit of 7 years on Analyzer?

Answer: The Gem device has been validated in children 7 years of age. In addition, the Gem may not be able to accurately determine RMR in children younger than 7 years due to the specifications of the GEM requiring 500 ml of tidal flow and 72 ml/min of oxygen uptake.
